What steps are you taking to back up?

Have you tried using the Database Utility?

Your database has corruption and need to be rebuilt.

Make a duplicate in the Finder first as additional backup. A rebuild does
make a duplicate, but sometimes in the process the original and backup get
merged resulting in total disaster. It's rare but it happens.

How to rebuild:

Exporting as Entourage archive (.rge) file:

Instead of checking all items. Try one item at a time to identify where the
corruption is located. If it's messages, then you can try exporting as MBOX
files. Use the script below. It will fail on the folder with corruption.
When you identify the "bad" folder, you can try the old method of testing in
parts until you identify the "bad" message(s.) Some times you can even drag
the message to the desktop to save.

Overall, if the database utility will not rebuild, getting your data out in
bits and pieces can be a time consuming effort. It generally takes me approx
8+ hours to recover a damaged database for my clients. It can be done with
some knowledge and patience.

How to manually move your data. (when import fails and/or you need to move
to a new Identity same version or revert to an older version)
