backspace erases bullet

When I hit backspace, rather than decrease the bullet level, it just erases
it - frustrating

Should be fixable but how & where to do it varies with version of Word -
which you fail to mention.

first-indent with tabs and backspaces.

For some reason that hasn't worked - the tab works fine, but the damn
backspace . . .

This is not a feature I use, but I don't think backspace ever worked for me.
It may work if you're actually using an outline-numbered list, however.
