backspace function not functioning well

usually when the wrong word i highlighted then press backspace, it will
delete that wrong word. but now cant function. so when i highlight the word
then press backspace, its still there the word. now i can only use the del
button.
help me. i use microsoft word 2002.

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing replaces
selection" box | OK.
