Backup DBs

Since moving to Access 2003 I have noticed that Access seems to create backup
copies of MDB files itself, I think it is maybe Compacting and repairing the
DB which creates this file. Is there an automatic C&R or does it mean the
system has crashed and someone has said 'yes' to repair?

Correct. These are caused by Access 2003 crashing and doing a backup
before compacting and repairing. But there is no prompting done by
Access. It automatically creates the files.
