Is there any way of backing up the contacts & calander to a disc?

You would have to Export them to a .pst file then you can copy it to a disk
for backup.

Dont export, with OL closed simply copy the pst (data files)

If you are using Outlook with Exchange, use the sub-menu "Export
Import" in the "File" Menu
If you are using Outlook with a PST file, you can do the same, of you
can use BackupMyFolder from www.addonmail.com, that allow you to
select folders you want to backup
