basic scheduling query

Hi all
(Today is one of those days where I think I shouldn't be allowed to be
in charge of a kettle, let alone an IT project...)

OK, so I have a development manager who tells me his list of tasks
will take a certain number of man days to complete, and that he has 4
full time resources assigned to them.
Ergo..a task estimated to take 4 man days should finish 1 in day, if
all 4 of them are working on it at the same time.
So, why does his plan still show that 4 days will elapse before the
task is completed?
I've no doubt this is something really basic...
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Many thanks
lynne

What task type are you using. If you setup the task as
Fixed Duration and make the work 32 hours or the duration
32 hours and then assigned Resoruces, it would be 4 days.

Lots of other reasons it could be like this but once you
make changes if it stays 4 days it means you have a Fixed
Duration task.

Hi Lynne,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

I always recommend in these instances to use Window/Split, and you will see
in the lower screen the settings of effort driven and task type. Thus you
can see and control the three elements of Units X Duration = Work.
Experiment with these settings until you get them all to meet your needs.
One point, if you change effort driven and/or task types, click the OK
button to set Project into that mode before changing the data.

Please note the new Project newsgroup arrangements repeated in FAQ 24 -
Project Newsgroups, as this one is closing down.

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on:)
