BCWP calculation

I am using MSP 2000. I have a task that has a March 1, 2009 start date and
April 30 end date. I added the actual cost for this task before it was
baselined. So the actual cost = baseline cost. The status date is set to
April 30. The task is 100% complete. Shouldn't the BCWP equal the baseline
cost? It does not.

Hello Nova85,

What version of Project including Service pack are you using? Are
there resource assigned to the task? Normally, you can not manually
add actual cost for a task, it is calculated by project based upon
Cost (work*standard rate + fixed cost + cost resources) * %
complete. How did you add Actual Costs?

Usually the only way to manually add actual costs is to turn off the
option "Actual Costs are calculated by Project" on the Tools >
Options, Calculation tab. Is this what you have done?

Give us some more info and we'll try to be more helpful.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Julie,
Thanks for the reply. I'm running MSP 2000- (9.0.2000.0224) on Microsoft
2000 professional. Yes there are resources assigned to the task. Yes I do
have "Actual Costs are calculated by Project" turned off. My plan to track
cost is to update the actual cost for a task on a monthly basis in the actual
cost field. I do not get details on the cost of the work performed.

I noticed that the difference in the BCWP and baseline cost is a a cost from
Dec 2008. The BCWP does not include it. I changed the start data to Dec 1,
2008 but no change in the BCWP $.

Hi Nova85,

Thanks for the additional information. So, to summarize:
You have resource assigned to tasks -- but no costs associated with
each resource.
You've turned off Actual Costs are calculated by project and are
manually entering actual costs.
After entering actual costs, you've saved a baseline, marked the
task 100% complete and updated the status date.

Now the BCWP does not equal the baseline cost?
Did you perhaps add an additional cost (fixed cost) after baselining
the task?

I don't have Project 2000 available any longer and I don't recall if
there were earned value problems with that release. If you'd care
to, zip a copy of the file and send it to me. I'll open it in 2003
and see if I can spot anything. Send to prjng [AT] maine.rr.com.
Remove the spaces and replace the [AT] with an @.
