Beginner learning VB

Hello,

I am in the process of finishing the VB 6.0 Step by Step
by Michael Halvorson. I am a complete and total rookie
when it comes to programming. Batch files is as far as I
have gotten in my career in IT Support.
Now I want to transition from support to development. I
found VB to be much easier than I thought, but still do
not have the kind of grasp I want on some of the rules
and coding, but it is coming along better than I thought
possible.
So my question is:
After Step by Step VB 6.0 should I move on to VB .net
Step by Step by Michael Halvorson or does anyone have a
better suggestion. I am also looking at the beginner
course offered by Microsoft Training. I really want to
get ramped up on this and looking for expert advice on a
good easy to absorb learning curve.

I hope my question is not out of place and I do
appreciate any kind of advice. BTW I found Michael's
writing and teaching to be outstanding!

Thank you
John

Since you have VB6, you may want to get in some practice before moving on
up. On the other hand, there are large differences in VB6 and VB.NET.
Microsoft let C programmers touch Basic again. If you move to it now, you
will have less to relearn since you will be learning it for the first time.

Sorry if it's not much help.

The best thing you could do now is apply that knowledge. Why not think of
application to write and use you what you now know to create it? The best
ideas are ones that would be useful to you. As you build it you can take
new ideas from articles and other books and implement them into your app.

Another good idea is to take an application you already use and recreate it
in VB. It may sound silly to some but what you are after is the learning
experience.

After you create them app in VB 6 turn around and create it again in VB.Net.
After doing this once you will know a lot.

Good luck!
