Best way to move messages to a CD?

Mitche

I want to move a message folder from my personal folder to a CD to reduce the
size of my data file. How is the best way to do this? I've reached my storage
limit on our server and the SAs won't give me any more...

Create a new .PST file on your hard drive, drag the folder to it (you might
have to right-click and drag to get a Move option -- I think dragging
between two .PST files will copy by default), then close the new .PST out of
Outlook and copy it to the CD. If you need to retrieve data from it later,
use the method described at
http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/readarchive.htm.

Archive your older items to an archive.pst file and then copy that file to
CD. To reuse it, you must copy it back to your hard drive and remove the
Read-Only attribute from its properties. Then use File->Open->Outlook Data
file in Outlook to access any items.

After furious head scratching, Mitche asked:

Thanks Jocelyn! Just moved 120MB. Hopefully I'll get at least 500MB moved
into strorage. I'm keeping a temporary backup, jic, but as I grow to trust
it, I'm sure I'll be saving lots of space! And thanks for the link! That led
me to many other links. More than I ever wanted to know, actually. :)

Thanks, Milly! I must admit I've always been leery of "archiving" messages. I
don't understand it and it always just seemed easier to "just say no"
whenever it asked me to if I wanted to archive. Until I ran out of space,
everything was just like I wanted it. But, alas, all good things must come to
an end.

I've been using computers since DOS 2.11. I build my home computers. Outlook
on the exchange server here at work has me completely baffled and buffaloed.

Thanks for the help!

Jocelyn,

This is exactly the information I was looking for. But now my question is:
how do I create a archive.pst file on my hard drive?

I appreciate any help you can give me.

You create a PST with File>New>Outlook Data File (or Personal Folders File,
depending on Outlook version, which you didn't mention). However, this
isn't technically an "archive" PST. Click File>Archive to specify the
AutoArchive settings and then select the archive settings for individual
folders by right-clicking each in turn and opening Properties.
