beta software

I just tried to go on Word and got a message that
my "beta software" has expired and I should either
upgrade or remove it. Then I discovered I could do
nothing with anything I have in Word except open files,
nothing I type goes in, no command works.

I guess you have a beta of Office 2003 installed? Betas are always
time-bombed. You'll need to uninstall it and install a full version of the
product. It is best to reformat your drive and do a fresh installation to
ensure that there are no beta gremlins left residing on your HDD.

Have I not heard that you can safely install over the beta of Office 2003?

The Office 2003 installation is designed to detect the beta
applications and remove them.

I tested this portion of the installer and all Office apps appear to
work 'as advertised'. However I don't use Outlook for email so I
couldn't tell you if it has problems.
