Big problem with numbered lists

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Hi everybody,
I'm having a big problem with a word 2008 file. In this file I've numbered all the paragraph titles with 2 levels: title 1 and title 2. Everything is working till I print the file. When I print it in some different point of the document numbering fails (for example the second level number 5.8 become 4.1 and many of the following change). In the file, at the end of printing numbers are wrong but different (4.1 is now 5.1) and if I change something in the document all the numbers become correct again till the next print. I check in the document structure to see if something was strange but nothing. What can I do? It's a 60 pages document that I can't print. Thanks for your help.

Hi Giulio:

Use the styles "Heading 1" and "Heading 2" and your numbering will "just
work". Use anything else, and it's a major job.

Shauna Kelly explains it all:

Hi John, thanks for your answer.
But I think what I'm calling "title 1" is a ugly translation of "heading 1" in my word 2008 that is in italian. Is the standard name for the style for heading; I didn't change it. So I think my problem remain.

Hi Giulio:

Ah! OK, I don't have the Italian localisation.

But yes, in English we need the standard, built-in "Heading 1" to "Heading
9" series of styles to make this work. The thing that controls the
numbering is the "Level Number" of the paragraph, which is a static property
of the built-in Heading series of styles.

We're going to have to do some more research...

When you click on the number, all of the numbers on the headings above and
below should be highlighted in gray to show the extent of the list they
belong to. If some of the numbers do not go grey, those paragraphs are not
part of the list, re-apply the style to those.

If you switch to Outline View, you can see only the headings in the
document, which makes this test easier to do.

If there are any Tracked Changes in the document, resolve them all. Hidden
Tracked Changes produce some very strange effects in heading numbering.

Similarly, if there is any "hidden" content in the document, reveal it:
again, numbering can do some funny things if the document contains hidden
content.

Cheers

Hi John,
I've tried everything without results. When I go back to the printing layout and I try to print, numbers change again. What else can I try?
Is it normal that the "page break" line has the same style of the next line? I've many with the "heading 2" style and if I try to change it also the style of the next line change.

The problem is still pending after copying all the text in a new file and reformatting. I thing a big bug is in the program: in the outline view everything is ok and switching to the print layout numbers change. Is impossible to work!

Hi Giulio:

Yes, it is normal for the page break to take on the style of the immediately
following paragraph: the page break is actually "part" of the following
paragraph.

Generally, Word's numbering mechanism des not have bugs. It used to have,
but it was fixed a few years ago, so now it works correctly.

However, it is very complex, and I am not seeing enough detail from you to
begin to diagnose the problem. I appreciate that English is not your first
language and you are doing your best, however, I do need more detail before
I can help you.

Would you like to email me a sample? I am currently at Microsoft
Headquarters in Redmond, I can get one of the Italian software testers to
take a look for you.

Cheers

It's very difficult for me to send you a sample because the document is company confidential. Anyway I can tell you that the same document on a window machine can be printed without any problem.
On mac the first 5 paragraph are now ok but inside the 6th one many sub paragraphs (heading 2) change the number during printing (also doing a pdf) apparently without changing in the document.

Yeah, well, I am sorry, but I need an exact description of the structure
within the list, or I need to see a sample.

When you print, the entire document is re-computed: I need to know how you
built that numbering before I can say anything useful.

Cheers
