Billy - Microsoft Outlook 2002 issue

Hi Experts,

I need help on Outlook 2002. For some reason I am not able
to read all the old messages. This is not my account and I
am not sure what the previous user did. I checked the .pst
file size is 690MB, but the size of the Personal Folder is
only 2573KB as a total including the subfolders. For sure
not all the messages are showing. Can you tell me what is
the problem and how I can view all the messages?

Thank you very much!

Billy

Hi - what happens when you try?
Have you tried making a copy of your PST file for backup (with Outlook
closed) and running scanpst.exe against the 'real' PST file?
Is the PST file stored locally on your computer?

Hi,

I exported the pst file to the desktop, and created a new
user account in Windows. I copied the pst file
onto the desktop of the new user account and imported the
file to Outlook, but no luck. I was still only be able to
see
a few emails. There are many folders being created and
most of the messages are gone. For the few emails
that are left, they mostly dated July, 04 and August, 04,
except there is one message dated Oct, 03. Also, I don't
know
how to run the scanpst.exe against the pst file, so I
didn't do that. The pst file is stored locally on my
computer.

Please help!

Billy

Never export a PST if you intend to open the produced PST in Outlook.
Exporting can fail to reproduce some of the information in the original PST.
To move a PST from one machine to another, just copy the original PST and
open it on the other machine with Outlook's File>Open>Outlook Data File.

Thank you for you information! I tried your method, but
there is no luck! Is there anyway I can check rather part
of the data was corrupted? It is funny to see the pst file
size is 690MB, but when I open the file, it became 2615KB
for the Personal Folder size.

Please advice!

Thank you very much!

scanpst.exe, usually in C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033

for the Personal Folder size.

That is peculiar.

I ran the scanpst.exe, and there is no error. If the user
delete the messages, would the pst file size stay the same
and not showing up in the folders? Now I am clueless what
I can do to retrieve the messages! Pls help!

Thank you very much!

I bet the file size will shrink if the OP compacts it.

An uncompacted PST, however, should show less space taken than the file
system reports because the PST properties whon't report the white space,
while the file system will. How is it that the file system can report less
space than the PST properties?

I went to properties to check the size of the pst file,
which shows 690MB. And I went to Outlook, right click on
the Personal Folder, then click on Folder Size, which
shows 2615KB. Show I compact the pst file? And if I do,
would I be able to retrieve the messages?

Thanks for you information!

Other way 'round....file size is reported as 690MB; within Outlook it's
reporting 2.6MB, non?

That's what the OP said, yes, and that's what I believe is peculiar. Since
an uncompacted PST still contains the white space, the file system should
report a larger size that Outlook's PST properties show. Unless the
administrative data within the PST is scrambled, I don't see any way for the
file system to report less space than Outlook reports.

But it isn't, if I've read correctly - file size is 690MB - in Outlook,
reporting as under 3MB.

Duh! <slaps head>. I've looked at those numbers at least three times and
still did not see the change from Mb to Kb in the original post.

I'll go sit in the corner now.
