Blank Worksheets

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I am pretty new to Excel 2008 but have started to use it again. When I create a table of say, 10 rows by 20 columns, Excel periodically and without me doing anything, jumps waaaaaaay to the right to a blank worksheet. I have to grab the slider at the bottom and move it back to the left. This happens repeatedly and regularly. Why?

Also, is there someway to get rid of all the unnecessary worksheets to the right? Can't I just add columns and rows 'as needed'?

Thanks

I can't fully answer the question without more details including exact
update levels of Office & OS X, but I can clarify one thing :) There are no
"unnecessary worksheets to the right". You're working in Page Layout View
which displays the one sheet separated into pages. Unfortunately, MacBU
apparently wanted this to be 'discoverable' [since it replaces Print Preview
in 2008] so they set it as the default view.

You can use the buttons at the lower left corner to switch to Normal View,
with which I think you'll be more comfortable. You can also change the
default view in Excel> Preferences - View.

Thanks for the reply and the clarity.

The issue arose when I downloaded a template that had a simple worksheet that was only 7 columns wide. There were no columns beyond 7. How can I do that?

There are a couple of possibilities, so not having seen the file or the
template I can't be sure, but the most common method is to use the Hide
Columns/Rows feature from the respective listings in the Format menu.

Another option is to use a Border & Fill of the same color on the cells you
don't want to have visible.

To prevent accessing the cells you'll also need to be familiar with
Protection features. See Excel Help on the topic: Restrict Data Entry.
