Block words & delete not working in word 2002

Does anyone have any ideas on why my version of MS word
2002 (on PC) will not let me block a word and then either
hit delete or backspace or type over the top of it.

If the word is not highlighted I can hit backspace or
delete.

It use to work!

In Word, click on Tools | Options | General | uncheck the two boxes for
WordPerfect help and navigation.

I have tried this wordpefect help and navigation boxes -
that does not seem to work.

The blocking of a word and hitting delete does work. It
is the type over function or backspace of the blocked
work that does not work.

Any ideas?

Sorry, Michael. I misread your question. Click on Tools | Options |
Edit | check the "Typing replaces selection" box.
