Blocking a domain from accessing a web

C

Crash Gordon®

Is there a way to block a domain from accessing one of my webs?
If so is it something I can implement or does it have to be done by registrar?

S

Steve Easton

What kind of server??

If a Apache/UNIX it can be done using an .htaccess file.

Why do you want to stop them??

It's done on the host server. If on a Windows server, it's done by blocking
the IP, IP range, or reverse Lookup (which is resource intensive). It's
done via IIS Manager, under the security tab of the web site properties.

The host would have to do it under Windows, unless you know ASP, ASP.net etc. However, do not block
AOL users, as AOL rotates the IPs. The only real individuals that you can block are those with
static IP address (DSL, Cable, T1, T3, etc.) as well as web sites and spiders.

they have static ip addr. i want to block them (its a long painful legal issue) from following my company's activities. Their users would most likely all be coming out of the same server - I think they'd be too stupid to try access from home machines anyway.

Hi Crash......

This is not really a very hard asp problem, especially since you know the ip
address.

Hard code the address into a variable.....
get the ip address
compare the ip address with the variable
if they are the same... redirect ( to a really nice.... not a chance of
viewing my site page) or exit

probably just 4 or 5 lines of code.

Anyway... hope this helps.....

Cable and DSL are as likely to be dynamic these days as dial-up connections.
A good rule of thumb is, if it has a domain name, it's static. Otherwise,
you're taking your chances.

Crash,

Rather than block them or redirect them to their own server, both of which
will tip them off, why not create a small dummy site with harmless, useless
information and redirect them there? It could be months or longer before
they wise up.

message Thanks guys, I'll try to figure it out from stuff you provided. It would be
really to redirect them back to their own web...that would really freak them
out (which they throughly deserve)

message I only just learning asp.

All the individuals I want to block would be coming out of the same server
(they own they're own) - I know they're static.

| The host would have to do it under Windows, unless you know ASP, ASP.net
etc. However, do not block
| AOL users, as AOL rotates the IPs. The only real individuals that you can
block are those with
| static IP address (DSL, Cable, T1, T3, etc.) as well as web sites and
spiders.

| | I know their ip addr.
| Generally is that something I can do, or does my host have to implement
this?
| Yes, I'm on Winders server.
|
| | | It's done on the host server. If on a Windows server, it's done by
blocking
| | the IP, IP range, or reverse Lookup (which is resource intensive). It's
| | done via IIS Manager, under the security tab of the web site properties.
