Blue Screen Of Death relating to bbw54.sys

Recently I have been getting BSOD's happening that are relating to this file
- bbw54.sys. I have search the PC (hidden files+folders, system files+folders
included) and could not find this file. I then looked into the registry for
it, and found it under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\SearchAssistant\ACMru\5603.
All I would like to know is a) Has anyone else ever experienced BSOD's
relating to the same file, if so how did you cure it, and b) is this a known
problem and is there an easy fix.

Hi InterACSS and Bob,
I am a new user of this forum and seek urgent help. I use Windows Vista
Home basic on my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop and have been getting blue screen
of death 'dump crashes' for a week now! I am self employed and this is
really setting me back. I was using Word when it first happened but now it
seems it can happen at any time. I had also been experiencing 'freezes' or
'hangs' but this seems less frequent now. Is it safe for me to use Registry
CleanFix free download to repair the problem or not? Any advice would be
great - thanks. JMLM

I don't have any information as to this file being part of MS Office at
all. First, do not use any "so called" automatic registry cleaner, as
then you will just add more grief to your life due to indiscriminate
removal of registry key. Then I would post your problem to one of the
Vista groups for assistance. I suspect that you have some kind of
malware infection, but the folks in the Vista group would be more
familiar with what it's responses are and the next step to take.

Hi InterACSS,

That 'Search Assistant' 5603 registry key lists the recent search strings used in

Start=>Search

looking for file names in Windows XP.

Can you provide the exact error message details and what steps seem to cause it?

What, other than Office, have you installed/updated recently on your PC?

.Sys files are commonly part of a driver for a hardware device (graphics, sound, network connection) or security (antivirus,
anti...) but can be from malware from websites, as well.

Next time it decides to blue screen, I will try to remember or write down
what the exact message says. As regarding any recently installed programs,
there are none. Since the machine build, no new applications as far as I know
have been installed to the machine. There doesn't appear to be anything
directly that causes it, I say that as the machine was left on over last
night, and when returned this morning, it had blue screened. If it is a case
of malware/virus/spyware etc, then neither Norton, AVG, McAfee could find it,
all tested individually of course, and I had up to date deffinitions for all
3 AV's.

I shall get back to this post once it happens again and will try to report
the whole BSOD message.
