I've not had the opportunity to see Word 2003, and can't think of what
they would have done specifically to Word to do this.
*IF* you have a laptop or are using a flat screen, check Display
Properties in Control Panel, Tab: Appearance, Tab: Effects.
Check ON "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts", and
pick Clear Type.
When I turned that on, my laptop display with from "cruddy" to "beautiful".
