Body Text reverting to Normal

I have had my Body Text style revert to Normal three times now. My hunch is that the definitions of the two are identical. But, it gets more serious when Word seems to get confused about what style a paragraph is. This third time, after turning all Body Texts into Normals, the count of Normal paragraphs was twice the total number of paragraphs in the entire document (10,375 Normals, 5,780 total paragraphs). Clearly, there is something wrong, confirmed when I asked word to select all instances of Normal. Word froze up, requiring a shutdown in Task Manager.

Am I correct in why Word is replacing Body Text with Normal? If so, can I prevent it? If not, can I prevent it from getting the paragraph count all wrong and locking up?
