bogging down after short period of time

I'm running Windows XP and Office 2003 and am having a problem with Word bogging down after being used for about an hour. It will be fine for a little while and then I'll go to open another file and it will take a min. or more to open a file, save a file, etc. After rebooting it will speed back up to normal for a short period of time then it starts bogging down again. I am on a network and it appears to not happen when I take the computer off of the network and access files only on the hard drive. (It's not only Word, but all Office products that this happens with.)

The computer is current on all Windows and Office updates.

Has anyone else heard of this problem & if so what did you do to correct it?

Sounds more like a network problem from your description - especially as it
doesn't start until you try opening or saving documents. I'd get the system
admin to check out the network point and the network card in your PC -
perhaps moving your PC to a different point may help with diagnosis. Check
that all your drivers are up to date too.

Are you all using Windows XP and Off 2k3? Is the file server a Windows 2000
server? If so what servicepack is it patched to? Is volume copy shadow
enabled? Has the Sys Admin looked at the server logs to see if there are any
errors occurring?

: Wouldn't it be a problem everyone would have if it was a network problem?
There are 2 of us with this problem, everyone else is fine.
:
: As for moving to a different point, I'm assuming you mean plugging into
the network at a different location and yes, I've done that already.
:
: All drivers are up to date.
:
: Could there possibly be something within Windows XP settings that could
cause this problem? I've heard that they have some refreshing settings that
cause some other problems like with printing.
:
: Thanks for anything you can offer.

This is a tricky problem then! I think the next thing to do is to eliminate
a third-party add-in or template. Start Word from the command line using the
a switch. Use Start, Run and type in

winword /a

and press enter. Word will start in its default install mode bypassing any
customisations, add-ins or macros. Run Word and see if this still bogs down.

: The problem started with Windows XP and Office XP but because our Office
XP was an upgrade from 97 we purchased a new full version of Office 2k3 and
the problem is still occurring. The file server is NT 4.0 fully patched.
no error logs are appearing

What is the processor speed? How much RAM do you have? How much free HD
space? It could be that the machine is underpowered for Word 2003.
