bogus warning from Microsoft

P

papadoug

I'm sure I'm not the only one this has happened to. I recently moved into a
new home and connected to the internet thru verizon. My computer had been in
storage for 6 months. Bingo I get a message that says the office copy is
registered on another computer. Before moving I ran Office for about a year
on the only computer this have been loaded on. The dialog box opens asking if
I want to register via internet or phone so I click internet. I get the
"other computer" message and asked to click Yes if I want instructions how to
correct the situation. I'm now sent into a loop back to the original dialog
box. I select phone and call the 888 number which is a FAX. I then call the
international 716 number and go thru the voice recognition questions about
the wizard. The robot then says it will connect me to a CS rep but instead
cuts me off. The online CS about Office says an email costs $35. How can I
get this problem resolved without having to pay? It might have to do with the
new modem.

What is the specific error message you got and what were you doing when you
got it?

P

papadoug

Thanks for the response JoAnn
I opened a .doc attachment to an email and the activation wizard opened.
When I request to activate via the internet, I immediately get the X button
and a message that ...according to our records, this copy of XP pro has been
activated on a different computer. Click OK if you want to go thru CS rep and
follow instructions...
I click OK and the message disappears but I just go back to the wizard.

I presume you are referring to the email attachment which triggered the
Microsoft response. Actually, I was checking a .doc I had sent as an
attachment that a recipient complained was coming across as Japanese
characters. I went to my sent folder and opened the email attachment which
was a Word file. Then I got the MS warning and now have the counterfeit
scarlet letter on my machine.

Mary
I had activated and registered the product over a year ago and everything
has been peachy until I fired up everything after my PC had been in storage
since January. I'm with a new DSL provider with a new modem. Only thing
different I can think of.

I loaded what came with Verizon and ran them. JoAnn, I remember last year I
had a technician look at a problem I was having. Turns out the heatsink was
loose. In the process he set me up with multiple startup options. I think he
may have loaded his own XP instead of mine because he didn't ask for my
disks. The product key generated during the update/authentication process is
different than what I show on my box. Should I reload XP Pro?
