Bold sets everything bold in Word 2003

When I change one word or a selection in my document to bold the whole
document changes to bold.

I am in Word 2003 and obviously some option is set to do this. How do I turn
it off?

Jason,
Most probably your normal style is set to automatically update. Activate the
taskpane for the styles, click on the arrow next to your normal style,
choose change and uncheck the automatic update checkbox.
