Bold single word or sentence

I've just started having this problem, if I highlight a word or a single
sentence to bold, the entire document becomes bold. How do I turn this off or
what have I done to make this happen?

Microsoft's Help system has landed you in the wrong newsgroup: this
one is for the database program Microsoft Access.

Please use the dropdown box (the one that says "Access" by default)
to select a more appropriate newsgroup, microsoft.public.word for
instance.
