book on Project best practices for IT company

Bunmi

Hi All,

can anyone recommend a book or URLs that covers best
practices for using MS Project 2003 with Project Web
access for IT company that specializes in custom software
development. We typically have btw 10-20 projects going
at the same time.

thanks.

I sincerely am not trying to be a cheerleader or a plugger BUT...
I am hoping that Gary has a new book in making for PS2003...
I have yet to find another source that gives you the meat&potatoes for
getting the job done.

I believe he does have one coming out soon devoted to Project Server 2003.
Hopefully he'll responded on when it should be available.

Fellas:

I gotta tell you that technical book writing is one of the lowest paying
jobs out there! Making a living keeps getting in the way, but progress is
steady, especially because Dale Howard has joined me in the effort. Best
guess is late spring/early summer, but it'll be worth the wait. Although the
2002 edition lacks coverage of the new Project Server features, changes to
the installation and the new SharePoint version, the guts of the book still
apply, especially when it comes to best practices.

Can I quote you on the book jacket? If so, send me an email.

Thanks Gary for the update.

I've done enough technical writing to know that it's not a fast process
(especially if you're trying to do it well). But good things are worth
waiting for.

Hope it goes smoothly for you (and quick!) -Pat

(BTW, what if MS decides to come out with PS04? -yet another book??? :) )

Until Gary's 2003 book comes out (but his 2002 book is still pretty
dead on for 2003 as well. only the install is really different) there
are several documents on the Project website:

Configuration Planning Guide
Application configuration guide
Installation Guide
Administrators Guide
Disaster Recovery Guide

All can be found by searching the Project section of the
www.microsoft.com/downloads page.

These can help you gain a better understanding of the deployment
requirements as well as pretty solid advise on installing and
configuring. There is also the EPM Deployment guide on that same
download site. It is based on 2002 but still has some good stuff.

Also, shortly there will be a tool released that will attempt to help
capture some of the requirements for your deployment. It should be
pretty cool.

I would add the Enterprise Implementation Framework.

The EIF was a good start. Here is a link to what is "basically" version
1.5 of the EIF:

The tools I mentioned before that are upcoming are what will ammount to
an update of coverage of the EIF and the EPM guide with some cool stuff
thrown in too. :)
