This may be far fetched, but check to see if the folder
options have been reset. Go to Settings|Control
Panel|Folder Options. On the General Tab, there should be
a section labeled "Click items as follows". Has the
single click to open an item been checked? If so, double
clicking might very likely open two instances of the same
program.
