An attorney has sent me a document with text in what I would loosley call
the left margin. It says "Draft" in large letters. I can't select this with
the mouse. How do I delete it?

It might be a watermark. You didn't mention the version of Word so I
can't supply specific instructions. Just check Help for Watermark.

That did it! I did not realize a watermark was treated under Header/Footer.
