Borders around paragraphs

Can you help please?
Word 2000
I'm trying to put one total border around three paragraphs.
It seemed simple enough.
It works fine as long as everything about each paragraph is the same.

However, I want "space before" Par 2 & Para 3 as 6pt.
As soon as I do that then the border around the three paragraphs
splits into two separate borders. One around the first para and one
around the next two!

What can I do to make only one border?
I can't find anything in help that does actually help this situation.
Many thanks
John.

This is the method I use. I hope it helps.

To make a border around several paragraphs, select the target paragraphs
then "Format" "Border" "Box" (or select lines).

That doesn't seem to happen in my copy of Word 2000 (I set up a simple
test to try it out).

However, you could try using a line return and setting the font size
for that to 6pt, to see if that gives you different results from using
the "spacing before" in the paragraph formatting. To do that, put an
extra return after the first paragraph, then click in the margin to
the left of the blank line. This should highlight one space on the
blank line. (If you turn on the paragraph marking, you can see that
it is selecting the paragraph symbol on that line.) While that is
selected, adjust the font size to 6pt, or whatever you need for
spacing between paragraphs.

Thanks for your reply.
I was about to try your method of an extra empty paragraph but after
your comment that it worked OK for you I tried doing it in a different
order and it worked! Strange.

This doesn't work:
Have three paragraphs with space before set to 6pt.
Put one total border around all three. This workd fine.
Change your mind about the first paragraph and alter the space before
to 0.
Word then creates two separate borders.

This does work:
Have three paragraphs with no space before
Put one total border around all three. This workd fine.
Change your mind about the second and third paragraphs and alter them
to space before = 6pt
Everything OK.

Once again thank you for your reply.
