Both Excel and Word are locking up when opening files - Help!

Over the past two weeks I have been unable to open Word or Excel file
attachements and most of my other saved files. The programs simply lock up
and I have to reboot via power off.

I have removed and reloaded Office twice as well as ensured that I have all
of the current updates. Help?

Similiar Problem!!! "Upgraded" to XP (2002 version) and to Office
Professional Edition 2003. Files won't open in Word or Excel -- old or new.
Files will not open when launched from My Documents. Then, the programs lock
up. What the $#%$#@? Apprecdiate ANY help or ideas.

Have you tried to open these files on another computer? (This is always a
good test to see if it's the files or your computer.)

Good idea! Yes, it is clearly my computer, as all is fine on my newer
laptop. Still, All of the older MS (word, excel, etc) worked fine with
windows 98. I think it has to do with the change to XP, then the loading of
office 2003. There must be some sort of "switch" or other very simple
solution to this...Thanks

Do you get any error messages? If so, what do they say? (Don't paraphrase.)

Might be worth a try:

Create a dummy printer or else point your default printer to a
different one you already have.

Could be a corrupt print driver causing grief when trying to render
the docs.

Are you running Norton Antivirus?
Do the office files hang just as office tries to run antivirus scan?

If so you can, in the short term, try switching off the office
virusscan function
