both horizontal and vertical rows are numbers

Can anyone help me out with this problem? Instead of one being
numbers and the other being letters I only have numbers going up and
across. Because of this I am not able to do formulas.

Turn off the "R1C1 reference style" setting by deselecting it on the
"General" tab sheet of the "Preferences" dialog.
