Box Character's when opening document

I have a problem with Office 2000. When I type a
document, and save it to a Novell file server(5.1),
everything appears to go fine. When I try and reopen the
document the whole page has been converted to little box
shaped characters and the following error message at the
top of the document "clienturlcache MMF version 5.2"

any help is appreciated

Well the message at the top of the page is referring to an MP3 converter!!!
Heavens knows how it is screwing Word and a Novell server, but there has to
be a serious incompatibility there somewhere.
