Breaking Links in Word

P

PR42

I am running XP Pro, Office 2007 Pro. With a document open, I select insert,
object, from file, and insert an AutoCAD drawing into the word document. Once
inserted, if I click on the drawing, it opens in AutoCAD. I want to prevent
that, Click on the Office Icon, select prepare, and one of two things happen.
Either the option to edit links isn't there, or if it is, the link to the
drawing isn't. The document is saved as a docx. I opened a new document,
right clicked on the drawing in the first, pasted it to the second, saved the
file, and then went looking to break the likn. Option not there. Click on
drawing, AutoCAD opens.
What gives????
Thanks

Hi PR42,

The reason your object is opening in AutoCAD is that it's been embedded in the document as an OLE object. You can prevent this at
the time you're pasting the image into the document by using Edit|Paste Special and choosing a suitable image format other than the
AutoCAD one. For existing AutoCAD objects, you could convert them by cutting & re-pasting with the same approach.

The issue here is that I am not copying and pasting, I am inserting. Once
inserted, I should be able to click on the drawing and edit it in AutoCAD.
Once finished, and the document is completed, there is an option to break the
link, leaving the drawing as a picture.
The problem is that the break link option is not available on the menu.

Hi PR42,

Even though you've created the object via Insert|Object, the reason it's opening in AutoCAD remains that it's an embedded OLE
object. As such, there are no links. Once you've finished editing the document, you can convert the object to an image by cutting it
out of the document then using Edit|Paste Special and choosing a suitable image format other than the AutoCAD one to paste it back
in. Other than that, the only thing that would stop the object opening in AutoCAD is if the recipient doesn't have that app on their
system.
