Breaking up an object to fill only one part

I've got an oval with parts divided by lines, like a pie.
I'd like to shade one piece of the pie a different color
than the rest, but the object is the oval, so the entire
thing gets shaded. How do I break up the oval object to
be able to select one part of it to fill? Thanks.
