Bullet alignment

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel All the bullets begin to far to the right for me.
I want to reformat the position of all bullets as a style, at every level, for a whole document. I can move them individually or in a bunch easily enough but I want to be able to set a style and hit TAB and have them all be further to the left than the default position. The first level is easy enough but the rest don't move with it.

Thanks

Begin by creating an OUTLINE list style, so you can have multiple levels in
the same list.

Then define paragraph styles into the list style, one paragraph style for
each level of the list you intend to use. Start with List Bullet through
List Bullet 9, because the styles are already built-in so you save some of
the work.

Then set the Indents and tabs for each level of the List Style.

Then go and correct the indents and tabs in each of the paragraph styles,
because the settings interact with the settings in the List Style, and Word
does not always get them right.

You will need Format>Style>Modify>Numbering... There's an unlabelled blue
disclosure triangle at the bottom of that dialog box: click it to see the
rest of the options you will need.

Shauna Kelly describes the process here:

Come back if you need more detail than that!

Thank you very much. Since you're there... All of a sudden my auto TOC now has a warm grey behind every line of text and the control tab that usually shows up at it's head no longer does. The missing tab not a problem since I can Cntl click to update but it's weird. I can't get rid of this color.

That's good! The grey is field shading that let's you know that "This is a
field, don't damage it and don't try to edit it manually because its content
is all auto-generated".

The pundits and pros run with Field Shading set to ALWAYS so we can see
where the little suckers are.

It's one of the Word Preferences in View.

That's great. I have no idea how I turned that on. I find Word very frustrating. Thanks for your help.
