Bullet Problem

I choose a List Bullet 2 style but change the round bullet for a dash.

Everytime I re-open the file, it reverts back to the circle bullet -

anything I can do to stop this as the company policy is a dash at level

2 bullets.

Thank you Suzanne, I read the web site and followed the whole deal on the
outline numbering for some bullet and number styles I have.
However, the new problem is - this is all done in a template that will be
used frequently. I attached the template to multiple documents yesterday and
then the outline indents would not appear. Everything is at the left margin
rather then stepped in. The style guide visually shows them on the left and
yet when I choose to modify the style to rebuild the .25" step for each
level, they are defined correctly - just not working though.
Any reason for this that you know of?

What happens if you select any given paragraph and press Ctrl+Q? And when
you attached the template, did you check "Automatically update document
styles"? (Be sure to uncheck it after the initial update.)

Automatically update is definitely not on. It has it's advantages but not
when I want others to use this template too. I understand styles well but
not my co-workers.
Anyway, nothing happens when I press Ctrl-Q. This document was 'Normal'
style first then I applied the styles. This effect is totally new and makes
no sense why all the definitions are correct and yet the result is all left.
I did however go back into Outline Number and OK'd the dialog for Bullet
Level 1 (having changed nothing) and everything snapped back into place.
This may have worked for me but this will be useless when I send the
document to the client and they have the same visual - meaning all on the
left even though the definition is correct.
Anything else you can think of would be greatly appreciated.

If what you're saying is that you attached the template and then applied the
template styles, then "Automatically update" would not be needed, but, just
to be clear, I'm talking about the setting in Tools | Templates and Add-ins,
not the one in Format | Style. But, although I am *not* an expert on
numbering, I've gathered that numbered styles often cause a problem in
attaching templates.

Hi Deborah
I did however go back into Outline Number and OK'd the dialog for Bullet
Level 1 (having changed nothing) and everything snapped back into
place.

This symptom can occur if you had previously clicked within a level 2
(or level 3 etc) paragraph and done Format > Styles etc from there. For
numbering to work properly, you must always click within a paragraph in
the style that is linked to Level 1 in your numbering scheme, and then
do Format > Styles etc. Once you've got your numbering set up properly,
remembering this is absolutely the hardest thing about maintaining the
numbering.
