Bulleting that wont delete!

I'm using Microsoft Office 2008, Microsoft Word in the Notebook Layout. I'm taking notes and when i press "Tab", it indents and creates a bullet. When I press "Tab" another time, in indents again, creating another bullet. My problem, is that if I am making a bulleted list, and then try to get out of the bullet form, when I try to press "Delete" to delete the bullet and the indent, it just deletes the bullet above it! How can I move from a bulleted list, to a non-indented style?

I'm not sure I understand "it just deletes the bullet above it!" but have
you tried pressing Delete *twice*... or going to Format> Bullets & Numbering
to select NONE?

Behind the scenes, Word is applying a style: you need to break out of the
style.

If you press Enter twice at the end of the list, Word will go back to the
Normal style for the next paragraph.

I don't use that mechanism: it's too flaky ‹ I apply the styles manually.
They are List number through List Number 9 (each one offering a greater
level of indent and a different bullet) and Normal and Body Text. I use
Body Text because Word uses Normal for things like pictures and tables, so
changing the Normal style makes extra problems.

So I set up Body Text to produce the formatting I want for normal text.
