bullets and numbers format - my way?

E

ELLIOTT

How do I change the format for bullets and numbering in
normal.dot? I have tried changing it and unless I
actually save a bit of text in the normal document it
will not retain any changes I make to the format/bullets
and numbering/customize menu.

I would rather not have to create styles.

I would like new documents to open and go into the auto
number or auto outline modes with the indents as I like
them, not as MS wants them.

Thank you.

The Bullets and Numbering dialog box simply displays the
recently chosen formats of the current computer. There is
no way to save anything to this location. If you want to
save a numbering scheme for easy retrieval, you must link
each numbering level to a paragraph style, as described
at:

www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

When you've formatted the outline the way you want it you
can use Save As to create a template for easy reuse.

Hi Elliott,

My suggestion would be to record a macro while changing the
settings for a numbering "style" to the way you prefer
them. Link the macro to a toolbar button, and simply click
that when you need numbering.

Thank you Cindy. I had thought of that. It just seemed
to me that there should be an easy way to set a default
format. There are so many other settings that are
available.

That's one that doesn't seem to be available :) Since you
said you were adverse to fiddling with styles, that's the
closest you can get, really.

There is an internal Word command FormatNumberDefault that
is called when you click the "Number" button on the
formatting toolbar. But you'd still have to record the
macro code for it to execute, there's no way to "get into
the guts" of what the command does.

If you wanted to start with some of the work done for you,
you could change the LIST style's definition, then use
that. Keep in mind that styles can also be assigned to
toolbar buttons :)
