bullets and outlines

I am a mac word user - I somehow changed a setting that when using
bullets when making an outline, normally you could delete or tab to
make the bullet indent more or less. Somehow that setting got turned
off and I do not know how to change it so that the tab button will
indent bullets again

Have a look in Word> Preferences - Edit, tick the box for "Tabs & Backspace
set left indent".
