I'm trying to get my document to look like the example below, with the *
representing the bullets, I'm unable to format it. The bullets only seem to
be able to list vertically...
example: *teacher *student *driver *parking
any help is much appreciated!

You do not say which version of Word you are using but it can be done
in all using the Listnum field.
You will first need to set up the bullet you require in the Bullets
and Numbering dialogue box.
* Make sure you are on the Outline numbered tab in 2003 or click on
the Multilevel list button on the ribbon in 2007
* Click on the gallery position that shows bullets in 2003 (should be
top right unless you have customised it previously in which case click
on the Reset button) and then click on the Customise button or click
on Define new multilevel list in 2007
* Choose the bullet you wish and in both cases click on the More
button to display additional features of the dialogue box
* Enter a name, eg horizontal bullets in the ListNum field list name
box
* Click on OK to accept the change
* At this point you will need to turn off the bullet that will have
been applied to your paragraph (I can't seem to find a way around
this)
* Key in your text and when you are ready for your bullet, insert the
ListNum field and click on the name 'horizontal bullets' under the
field properties list names and click on OK
It is not the fastest but it does at least work. Good luck.
