Bullets

WinXP Pro & OfficeXP 2002, Word 2002 w/SP3. When I want
to set a bullet (or bullet list) & click on the icon, all
lines in the doc are bulleted. Sometimes undo will delete
unwanted bullets, but now it's either all lines with
bullets or none. The outline numbers work perfectly. I've
also tried selecting lines to receive bullets, but still
get everything with bullets. Sometimes the same thing
happens with centering, underlining, etc. where one
selected word will produce an entire doc that is centered
underlined, etc. I've run "detect & repair" and checked
online for updates. Help/advice is appreciated and
greatly needed. Thank you.

Format > Styles and Formatting > Select the "Normal" style (or the style
that applies to your text if you have created one);
Choose to modify it (Either by clicking on the "Modify" button at the bottom
of the dialog, or by right-clicking on its name and choosing "Modify" in the
menu that pops up in the Style pane);
Uncheck "Automatically Update";
Click "OK";
Close the dialog or the pane;
Problem solved!

Thank you. The URLs are very helpful and
unchecking "Automatic Update" made a difference. Haven't
given it a full test, but seems to be working normally
now. Yes, this is a very unstable AND AWKWARD feature
that MS should fix!
Thanks,
Jim

It is not a broken feature. It is very useful for some types of styles. like
TOC styles. When I change something in my TOC, I like to have all
corresponding TOC level to match my change...

But of course, if you are not aware it is on... that can be annoying! Maybe
it should not be on by default, especially for the Normal style.
