Button Appearance Choices

In Office Professional 2007 can I still change the appearance of the buttons
I add, and if so, how?

If you mean that you'd like to edit toolbar buttons the way you could with
Office 2003 and earlier, no. That feature is not present for Office 2007
ribbons. For applications that still use toolbars, editing is still possible
,For example, in Outlook 2007's main window, you can edit the toolbar
buttons, but in a message/task/appointment/etc. window, you cannot edit the
ribbon buttons or the quick access toolbar buttons. There might be 3rd party
tools that can do it, but I haven't used or seen any.

There are a couple of ways you can modify the Office 2007 Ribbons but only one that is built in allows a 'choice' of icons. From
outside of Office you have more latitude.

In Office 2007's ribboned apps it is possible to modify the ribbon (it's built with XML) icons either on your own
http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/Customize_Ribbon.htm
[try following the steps, it's not quite as intimidating as it would appear just reading through it <g>)

or you can customize the ribbon with 3rd party products, that include
http://pschmid.net/office2007/ribboncustomizer
http://toolbartoggle.com
and when customizing, on the custom built Ribbon tabs you can add custom button icon choices

If you have a macro and add it to the Quick Access Toolbar you can choose one of 215 Microsoft 'chosen' buttons for those macros.

If you have a custom Word 97-2003 toolbar with custom button faces (not customizations to a built in Word97-2003 toolbar) and the
toolbar is save within a Word .dot template and attach that template in Word 2007
(Alt, T, I) or place it in the Word 2007 Startup folder those buttons and toolbars should appear the same in Word 2007's Add-Ins
tab.

Other than those choices the buttons on the Ribbon and Quick Access Toolbar in Office 2007 are pretty much 'as is'. Part of the new
interface criteria is that consistency in location and look will, over time, lead to more familiarity with more features than folks
might have used in the past.

I'm not sure that I am trying to accomplish the same thing as original
thread. I just received Office 2007 on a new laptop and I hate the new
ribbon appearance. Is there any way to change it to the Office 2003
appearance? I hope so. If not, this version of software will be chucked in
can and I will scrounge for an unused version of Office 2003.

Not built in. But, there are some options:

http://pschmid.net/blog/2007/04/20/111 (there's a free version)

You can also make the Quick Access Toolbar resemble Word 2003's main
toolbars, which was my own salvation:
