Cached Mode

In Outlook utilizing Cached Mode and lost my network connection. It was my
understanding that Outlook would go into Disconnected mode, then Connect
again when the network was available.

Our network was down for 3 hours and after a certain amount of time Outlook
went into Offline mode and we had to broadcast a voice message firmwide for
users to change their mode to Online. Is this behavior as designed? The
online material that I have read seems to indicate that this process should
be automatic.

Your understanding is the same as mine, but I've never gone w/out a network
connection this long to see where Outlook doesn't reconnect. Is there a
possiblity that some users restarted Outlook during the down time and came
up in an "offline" status to start with?

I'd have to second (third?) this suggestion - I've never seen this happen,
either, when Outlook was not started offline.

Hey,

Some of the Outlook MVPs are talking about this offline and a generic
question came up. When you mentioned that network connection was down, do
you mean the link between sites or more like pulling the ethernet line cord
out of the wall? Right now we are kinda wondering about network layout.
For example, does the client connect to DC/GCs and Exchange that are across
the WAN link or is there a DC/GC/DNS server local to them and the only thing
going across the WAN link is Exchange?

Dear Jesslyn,

Thank you for posting here.

Based on my research and test myself, it is possibly that after losing
network connection, Outlook turns to Offline Mode and will not
automatically switch to online mode again. As workaround, user could turn
the state back to online mode by right clicking the Outlook icon in the
status bar, and choosing online, or user can click Send/Receive button to
make Outlook verify the Exchange availability.

Hope this helps. If there is anything I can do, feel free to let me know.
Thanks and have a nice day!

Thanks & Regards,

Lee Li
