Calendar displaying incorrectly

G

Gene Kennon

Does anybody know a fix to the calendar problem of incorrectly
displaying multi-day events?

When I create an multi-day event and there is an event of any kind on
a subsequent day covered by the multi-day event, the bar display goes
one day beyond. In the event details, it is still correct, just
displayed incorrectly. The only fix I have is to create an all day
event on the day the bar is displayed (gone too far).

Also, I can display a multi-day event correctly that lapses into the
next month, but it displays incorrectly as a week long event when
viewing the next month.

Have I been clear or obtuse? The calendar is becoming unusable due to
the incorrect displays. After all, I can't trust when it has displayed
correctly and am left to my memory, which defeats using a calendar,
doesn't it?

Regards,
Gene

I don't see either problem (Entourage 2004), not have I ever seen this
mentioned before for Entourage X or 2001 either (which I also used to use).
So the issue must be specific to you, not Entourage.

First make sure that your time zone settings are correct in both Entourage
Preferences/Calendar and in System Preference/Date & Time.

If everything there is correct, do an (Advanced) Rebuild of your database:
hold down Option key at launch and choose Rebuild (2004), or Advanced (X.
2001). It might not correct existing events but you should be OK for new
events, so delete problem events and make new ones.

If there's still a problem, make a new Identity (Entourage/Switch
Identities/New) and try a few test events there. What happens there?

Were any of these problem events made via some Sync process or Import from
another application?

I forgot to include that this is Entourage 2004 for Mac version 11.1.0
(040913) installed on an iMac G4 under Mac OS 10.3.6

Thanks, Paul. I've checked integrity and no problems. Rebuilt the
database anyhow. No problem events, or any others, have been created
via sync or import. Dates in prefs and Control Panel are and were
coordinated. I'll try the new identity solution next.

Gene

Okay, I created a new identity and that didn't help. In fact, I've
noticed new behavior. The bogus multi-day bars will not delete. When I
move them to another day, the original remains and a duplicate on the
new day appears. When I try to delete the duplicate, it won't delete
unless I "delete all" vs "delete one" (this is a series event). If I
"delete all) on a duplicate, duplicates and originals get deleted and
the incorrect display remains.

Since I use two multi-day events every week and they don't display
correctly, Entourage is pretty much useless at this point. I can
watch some bars change as I move from one month to the next (e.g., Dec
30-Jan 2) where they are correct when viewing December, but incorrect
when viewed in January. The correct event bars viewed in December are
12/21-27 and 1/2-4. When viewed in January, they display as 12/21-1/4.

Gene

I have the exact same problem and came here for a potential solution.
I'm afraid to take the actions of Gene for fear of ending up with his
additional problems. Bottom line is I only use month view, and if a
multi-day event runs from one month into the next, when I few it in the
later month, it shifts the whole thing according to the number of days
in the bar, even though when you click on the description it is
accurate. Hopefully, someone can assist us.
Thanks,
Dayna

I too am having similar problems in Entourage's calendar. Multi day events
add about a week in month view!!

I too am seeing this in month view.

Specifically, multi-day event with banners that wrap around the end of
the month display CORRECTLY if viewed via the month in which the event
starts, but INCORRECTLY if you switch to the next month (the banner
extends anywhere from 2-7 days beyond its end date as defined in the
calendar event).

I mention it only because Paul seemed to think this was an isolated
problem.

P

Paul Berkowitz

OK. Do you see a definable pattern for hoe many days it extends, depending
on what criterion?

Yes. Say I have a multi day event that is 7 days, 1/26/05-2/1/05.
When looking at January month view, it looks fine.

Switch to February, and the multi-day banner starts on 1/30/05 (it
always starts in the upper left hand corner of the month view of the
2nd month - and says 12AM in front of it). The multi day banner
extends for the # of days/hours of the event itself. Thus, in this
case, it extends 7 days through 2/5/05.

So, my conclusion is that the program throws the multiday banner to the
upper left corner of the 2nd month's view at 12am (this is logical),
and extends the multiday banner the FULL LENGTH of the duration of the
event (instead of extending it until the end date/time).

Should be a simple fix for them to re-code the banner to extend from
that same upper left corner at 12am to the end date and time. No??

Paul et al

What BK describes is exactly what my calendar is doing!
It does it on my PB and imac so is not machine specific.

Yes, it should. There are MacBU staff monitoring this newsgroup at most
times, but just in case they missed this I'll pass it on. Thank you for a
clear and reproducible bug report.

Except for one little thing: I can't reproduce this bug. Everything is
perfect on my two computers and two copies of Entourage, following exactly
your steps.

So:

1) Which version of Entourage do you have - exactly? (Check Entourage/About
Entourage.) Have you updated Entourage 2004 to 11.10?

2) Which day if the week is First day of the week in Preferences/Calendar?

1) Version 11.1.0
2) First day of week is Sunday, but I have same behavior if I switch to
Monday.

Just played around a little bit. If I check "all-day event", it shows
fine.

It is if I have a specific start time and a specific end time that the
display is messed up.

P

Even with Monday week start I have no problem here.

You're sure you have this set as an All-Day event?

_THAT'S_ right. The problem is only for non-all-day events. I wasn't even
aware that multi-day banners were supported for timed events. I think there
are other problems with these too (like synching to Palm). I will report
this to Microsoft, but I'm not 100% convinced they'll see it as a bug, since
I'm not 100% sure it's supported. I suppose since there's a banner at all,
it should be.

In the meantime, maybe you should stick to all-day for multi-day events.

I'd hope they view it as a bug. If I'm out of town for a weekend, and
want to set an alarm to give me 1 hr notice when to hop in the car to
drive to the airport, then having a start time with a reminder is very
helpful.

But, I do understand that multiday events cause problems - like with
Palm, as you say, and I think with Exchange as well - as I believe I am
just beginning to find out.
I'm open to other suggestions. What do other people do?

PS - Paul - I just want to chime in and say how incredibly much I
appreciate all of the time and skill you devote to supporting Entourage
on the Mac. I have benefited greatly from your comments and the MVP
website, and I have relied heavily on your scripts when converting my
PC Outlook files to Mac, when doing my Christmas cards, syncing with
iCal and Address Book, and recently when composing a form letter.
With much gratitude,

True enough. For now, make the weekend trip an all-day multi-day event
beginning the next day with the Reminder whenever you want, of an all-day
multi-day beginning that day (no reminder) with a separate event or task for
the drive to airport or flight time, with a reminder whenever you want -
extra trouble to be sure.
But, I do understand that multiday events cause problems - like with
