Calendar updates always 'delay' then 'fail' to deliver

Although this didn't begin at installation of Outlook 07, it wasn't too long
afterward ... each time I create an appointment and send to multiple
recipients, it goes out fine the first time, however, if I make a change and
send an update, all recipients outside the domain will first be returned as
"delayed" and then will ultimately fail 24 hours later. I've investigated
this somewhat - in one case, about 30 recipients came back delayed then
failed - but I polled the recipients and they all had, in fact, received the
update. On other occasions, recipients will receive the update but then they
receive a cancellation (that, of course, I didn't send). And still others
and other instances - the recipients simply don't receive the update. Anyone
else having similar problems? I thought I had figured out a quick fix by
re-entering the email addresses, but then they started coming back as
'delayed' then failures.
