callouts in Word 2007

How do I use callouts in Word 2007? 1) I can't work with any of the Callouts
shapes-- selected from Shapes in the Illustrations group on the Insert tab.
Reason? Word will not allow me to choose where the leader (i.e., the line)
connects to the callout box. Word connects to a vertex only--and not to the
midpoint of a side!Furthermore, Word will not even let me tell it which
vertex to use. Results are unprofessional and my client rejected them. (Try
it for yourself). 2) I can't create a fake callout leader by inserting a
Line shape from Shapes in the Illustrations group on the Insert tab. The
line automatically becomes a Shapes Connector and then it will only connect
midpoints of a side. Problem? Well, the line connects the mid-point on my
callout box and the MID-POINT of my inserted Picture graphic. In other
words, I can't use the line to point to anything in the graphic (which is
what a callout does). With lots of yanking and gratuitous manipulation of
the line, I can SOMETIMES (never reliably) get it to disconnect from the
midpoint of the Picture. However, when my back is turned it's just as likely
to re-connect to that same mid-point? ANY SUGGESTIONS?

If I understand your dilemma I think you can resolve issue #1, which will
obviate issue #2 :) I agree that the default settings are not what I would
have chosen, but they're hardly etched in stone.

Right-click the callout & select Format AutoShape. On the Text Box page
click the Format Callout button, then open the Drop: list & pick Center.
Note that you not only have Top & Bottom options, but you can also type in a
value of your choice, such as .25", or whatever. You can also set the Gap:
of your preference to determine the distance the leader sits from the shape
-- 0" is totally usable. Obviously you might want to play around with the
other settings as well:)

Similar question (sort of) - When inserting text boxes or callouts - that
contain text - it seems that they have a setting that sets up a 1" internal
right side border of the text box - I have changed the internal margins in
text box properties but cannot get the text to fill the box- even I I choose
the option to resize autshape to fit text - it is driving me crazy!

I'm not sure I'm clear on what you're asking for. All margins in the shape
can be set to 0, but the text won't go flush to the right edge because of
the spacing required for the characters - normal line wrapping applies even
in a shape. The only suggestion I can offer is to apply Justified alignment
to the shape as you would a normal paragraph. That will force the text to
the right edge as close as the imposed spacing will allow.

If I'm missing your point I'd suggest you post back with a more descriptive
request as a new post... Those who have already marked this thread a "read"
will most likely never even see anything further here, but may have other
suggestions to offer.
