Can a 2007 runtime coexist with currently installed Access?

If so, how?

I'm finding that if a 2007 runtime app is installed on a machine that
currently has a version of Access already installed, then Access stops
working normally.

It's my understanding that the runtime overwrites an object library with a
newer version that the installed Access cannot use. Whether that's true or
not, is there a work-around?
