Bought a new computer (Compaq) which does not have Microsoft Office suite.
Can an older version (Office 97) be placed in a new computer?

If it is a retail purchase (over the counter/internet) and did not come
preinstalled on your old computer (OEM), yes. Proviso - if it is an upgrade
edition, you must have the qualifying product to install it again.

Be aware that Office 97 has some issues with Windows XP SP-2. Check this
news group archives for specifics.

Yes, just be sure to install all the updates for Office 97
after installing it, beginning with Office 97 SR1, then
SR2b, then install the other remaining updates.

Possibly not. You've already recieved several correct responses but I'm
guessing your Compaq came with Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 already
installed.

There's a bunch of fixes and workarounds and if you search the archives of
this group and/or microsoft.public.office.setup you'll find them but none are
completely satisfactory. You might shop around and see if you can find a
fairly inexpensive copy of Office XP, now that Office 2003 is out it's being
discounted a bit or you might take a look at OpenOffice:

<http://openoffice.org>

it's free and will open most MS Office files.
