Can anyone explain "Catastrophic Failure" in MS-Word / Outlook?

I am using MS office 2003 under Visio. It has worked fine for three weeks or
so, but now I am getting strange hangs in Outlook and just got a message
"Catastrophic Failure" in MS-Word. There is no other error information. I was
closing word and it prompted me to save changes, to which I answered Yes.
