Can 'box' be removed?

In Word 2003, when the Drawing toolbar is active and a Text Box or other
drawing option selected, a "Create your drawing here." box pops up, often
changing the appearance of the screen or losing the current place in the
document. Is there any way to keep this from happening? Thanks -Jim
