Can Entourage be used to access Google Groups

M

Michael Plog

I am in the process of switching from PC to Mac. In Entourage, I see this
news server. Can I get some of my newsgroups in Google Groups to show on
Entourage or Mac Mail?

Responses off group will be welcome if I have asked something everyone
except me knows.

Thanks,
Michael Plog

The good news is that there is nothing that everyone except you knows so
any question you ask will benefit several others. As for your question,
the answer is yes and know. Google Groups gives you a Web interface to
newsgroups without needing a news server. Entourage gives you "NNTP"
(don't ask me what it stands for) access to newsgroups, but it requires
you to have access to a new server. Groups like this one are freely
available via the msnews.microsoft.com newsserver. Most other groups,
however, are only available through non-free newsservers. You might have
access to one of these via your ISP (Internet Service Provider) in which
case you can access many groups that way. Entourage does an OK job as a
newsreader, but I haven't been thrilled with it. I am trying out
Thunderbird right now, but there are many others.

Entourage comes with the Microsoft servers. If you want to add other
newsgroups, you would need to set up a new News account under Tools >
Accounts.

Entourage's newsreader is pretty limited. It's great for the Microsoft
newsgroups because it's so easy to get started. Otherwise I would recommend
if you read a lot of newsgroup to check out Thunderbird, or use the web
interface to Google Groups

Any and all of the above is better than the Mactopia interface to this
newsgroup. The users that answer questions use newsreaders. Half the time
the Mactopia messages don't get synced to the newsreader and questions go
unanswered because we don't see them.
