Actually Excel seems to read the old DOS files just fine. I have never had any
problem with early Lotus formats (the same with old Quattro Pro files). Any file
with a xxx.wk* extension should work. What it will not read are the xxx.123
files. These are the lastest Lotus formats. I think the reason is that in the
early days Lotus had almost the entire spreadsheet market (like Excel today)
and Excel had to read Lotus files if it wanted to break into the market.
Once it had the market it stopped worrying about other file formats.
I don't know what file version is for Lotus 4.0. But if the default
extension is wk4 Excel should have no trouble.
If you want the Lotus files to appear in the file open box just scroll down
on the box below file name (File type) you will see wk? as an option.
