Yes, you may Sort the view. Set the View to Details, and then click Name.

I tried that but documents added since the folder was created are not listed
alphabetically.

Bob I

Click name again then, and set your system to remember view. This isn't
an Office issue but a operating system setting. (Tools, Folder Settings,
View)

I'm sorry, perhaps posting in the group for the Operating system you are
using will help uncover what the problem is being caused by.
